Tuesday, January 30, 1906.
We done a little studying in the morning. Then we went to the Corporation baths and had a swim. From there we went to Sister Atkinson's. Took dinner and tea. Elder Rich worked at the poth stick. I didn't do anything to speak of. In the evening we went to the Hall to hold our Choir Practise.
Wednesday, January 31, 1906.
Spent the forenoon studying the Mutual Lesson. In the afternoon we went to Wigton and began to tract. It with first tract found an indifferent class of people there. All though [Although] there were two or three who were willing to listen to the message, when finished we went to Sister Lightfoot's then home. Had tea and went to Mutual. From there home.

We spent the forenoon studying. In the afternoon we done some tracting. I found a lady who had been friendly with the Elders for years. I had a good talk with her and she took me to see her mother. Was bedfast [bedridden]. She was 88 years of age. When finished tracting we went to Sister Wetherell's. Had tea then went to Stanwix and spent the evening at Heath's.

We spent the forenoon studying. In the afternoon we went tracting. It was bitter cold and we finished tracting early. Went to Sister Cook's. Had tea. From there went to Newtown. Found no one home. So we returned to town and called on Persival's then went to Walker's and spent the evening.

In the forenoon we studying. After dinner we done some calling. Our first visit was on [at] Mrs. Carruther's. From there we called on Bro. & Sister Armstrong. Thence on Mrs. Sander. Had a conversation with her husband. From there we went to Sister Lightfoot's. Had tea and from there to Sister Atkinson's. Spent the evening.

Spent the forenoon studying. At 1 P.M. we went to the Hall and prepared for Sunday School. At 2:30 it commenced. Elder Rich presided. My class spent the time in testimony bearing. A fine spirit prevailed. We went to Sister Atkinson's for tea then returned to evening service. We had a nice meeting. After it held Choir Practise. Then went to no. 7. Spent the evening and came home.
Monday, February 5, 1906.
This morning we went to Newtown to visit Sister Nelson and others. Found them well and when finished visiting we went to Sister Cook's. Took dinner and then began tracting the Trinity buildings. When we had finished tracting we came to lodge. Then went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening.
Tuesday, February 6, 1906.
We spent the forenoon at lodge studying and writing. In the afternoon we went tracting. I met a man who threatened to kick me of [off] from his premises. I tried to talk and reason with him but no use. I was forced to leave with ought [without] removing from his mind the gross false hood and delusion regarding us Mormons. When finished tracting we went to Sister Taylor's for tea, then to Choir practise.

This morning we took some tracts and books and set out for Wetherell, tracting as we went. We finished all the houses on Warwick Rd. and it was noon when we arrived at Bro. Porter's. Had dinner and stopped a few hours there. Then we done some tracting in Warwick Village. When finished returned to Carlisle. Called a short time at Sister Atkinson's then went to Mutual.

The weather is clear but a very cold wind blowing. We were unable to do any tracting. After spending the forenoon at lodge we spent the afternoon visiting friends and Saints. Visited a Miss White, Wethereall's, Heath's and Lightfoot's then came to lodge and retired.

Spent forenoon at Lodge. In the afternoon we went tracting Gloucester Rd. Met with fair success. When completed we went to Newtown. Visited Nelson's and Reay's. Had a Gospel conversation at each place. Leaving Newtown we came down to Sister Walker's and spent the evening.

In the forenoon I studied the S.S. lesson. In the afternoon we went to Carruther's. Took tea. From there we went to Mrs. Sander's for a short time and then to Sister Atkinson's. Took supper and spent the evening.

After spending the morning in study we went to the Hall and prepared for Sunday school which was held with a good attendance. We went to tea at Sister Atkinson's and in the evening held our service which was well attended. After meeting Choir Practise was held.

After spending the forenoon at lodge we ventured tracting. The weather was quite cold. We began [at] Denton Home with third tracts. I met some who were friendly but others were very distant. When finished we visited Bro. Armstrong. Returning to lodge for tea. Then we spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's. (?????)

Spent the forenoon and part of the afternoon at lodge. Sister Atkinson called on us and we had a long talk over a little trouble that had occurred between us and members at No. 7. All was made right; although unpleasant at the time, in the evening we took tea at Sister Atkinson's, then went to hold Choir Practise. From there home.

We done some studying in the forenoon. After dinner we went tracting. Continuing our labours in Denton Home. When finished we took a walk up to the Cemetery. Then back to Sister Cook's where we had tea. Later we left to prepare the Hall for Mutual.

Studied in the forenoon. In the afternoon went tracting Denton Home. In the evening went to Stanwix. Spent the evening with Heath's.

Our forenoon was spent as usual at lodge studying, writing and reading. After dinner we set out to do some tracting. Met with good success with some exceptions of ridicule. When finished tracting we went to Newtown. Visited the Nelson's. Took tea at Sister Nelson's. Later came to lodge where we spent the evening.

We called on a number of the Saints during the day. Our first visit being at Sister Lightfoot's where we took dinner. Leaving there we called on Sister Sander's for a short time. Later we called on Bro. Armstrong then went to Sister Atkinson's. Spent the evening.

We done some studying till 1 o'clock at which time we went to the Hall and prepared for Sunday school. It being a nice day many attended the school and fine spirit prevailed. We took tea at Sister Atkinson's. And at 6:30 P.M. reassembled for evening service. The Hall was crowded to its utmost. A fine spirit was present. Elder Rich spoke first upon the First Principles. Then I spoke on the Godhead. After meeting we had Choir Practise.

Brother Sander Peacefully Passed Away
Wednesday, January 10, 1906.
In the forenoon we did some writing and studying. It was very cold, so we did not go tracting in the afternoon, but done [did] considerable visiting among some friends we made while tracting. We had conversations with them and left some books and tracts wherever we could. We spent a pleasant afternoon, met some fine people. In the evening we went to Sister Taylor's, had tea, and spent a pleasant afternoon. From Sister Taylor's we went to the Hall to hold Mutual. We had a nice meeting. Lesson was hard No. 4 in 1901-1902 Manual, "Erroneous Ideas of the Godhead". While at Mutual we heard Bro. Sander was very sick, so we went up after meeting. When we got there found he was very bad. We all knelt in prayer as to his request, then we anointed him but he grew worse and worse and we could see that life was nearly ended. At 11:20 he peacefully passed away. Bro Sander was 68 yrs. old. Had belonged to the church about two years. He had been afflicted for three years with a disease which completely racked his nervous system, therefore he had been a great sufferer, but he was a good man and loved the Gospel.

Spent a few hours. From there we went to Stanwix to visit Heath's. It rained all the time we were going to Stanwix and we got quite wet. After a pleasant evening we came home and retired.

Coplan. He had been reading the Book of Mormon. We had a two hour talk with him on the Gospel. After leaving his home we went to Sister Lightfoot's. Had supper. From there called on Sister Sander to see about the funeral.

Spent the forenoon at lodge studying. After dinner we went and engaged a cab for the funeral. In the evneing called at Sister Sander's. Then went to Sister Lighfoot's, had supper. Then to Choir Practise. From practise spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.
Sunday, January 14, 1906. very windy.
Spent the forenoon at lodge studying. At 1:40 P.M. the cab called for us and drove us to the home of Sister Sander, where we were to join the funeral procession of Bro. Sander, as we were going to conduct the service. After driving to the cemetery, we held the service in the Decenter's [Dissenter's] Chapel (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Carlisle_Cemetery_Dissenters%27_Chapel#/media/File:Dissenters'_mortuary_chapel_-_geograph.org.uk_-_902684.jpg). The chapel was crowded full of people who seemed to be impressed with the service. After the service we went to the grave where we sang a Hymn and dedicated the grave. From the cemetery we drove to Sister Sander's where a tea was given. After the tea we went to the Hall to prepare for evening service. Our hall was crowded with people, many of them who were at the funeral being present. We had a nice meeting after which we had a Choir Practise. From there spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.
Monday, January 15, 1906. Very Rainy.
This morning we started for Warwick to visit Bro. & Sister Porter. Soon after we started it began to rain. We only one small umbrella between us so before we reached Porter's we were wet, but there was a good fire and we soon dried and took dinner. In the evening, we were going to have cottage meeting but no one came, so we visited a man next door and had a long Gospel conversation. Late in the evening we started home.

In the forenoon we took our laundry to No. 7. Returning at noon, had dinner at Lodge, then went tracting. We had good success and when finished we went to Sister Cook's and took tea with them. Leaving there, we went to the Hall for Choir practise.

Spent the forenoon in study. After dinner went tracting. Denton Home District had good success. Took tea at lodge then went to Mutual. Had a nice meeting.

Spent part of the forenoon at Lodge. Then we went to Sister Lightfoot to take dinner. After spending a few hours with them went up to Sister Wetherell's. Had tea and spent a pleasant evening. From there to Stanwix to visit Heath's.

Today being an exceptional [ly] good day, we tracted both forenoon and afternoon. Met with fine success. After we had finished tracting we went to Newtown to do some visiting. From there we called on Mrs. Carruther's then on Bro. & Sister Armstrong. Leaving there we went to Sister Atkinson's where we spent the evening. It was the day after election; blue won.

Studied the Sunday School lesson in the forenoon. In the afternoon we attended Sunday School. Had a nice school after which we went to Sister Lightfoot's for tea. Returned in the evening to hold service, there was a good congregation and we enjoyed a nice meeting.

Wrote a short time in the morning. Went to Sister Atkinson's and done [did] a few odd jobs such as whitewashing the shop ceiling, also put up a clothes rack. Took dinner and tea while there.

Spent the forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we went tracting. Met with fair success. When finished we called Wetherell's shoemaker shop. Then on Sister Taylor. From there home. Had tea and went to Choir Practise in the Hall.

Remained at lodge in the forenoon. In the afternoon went tracting. After visiting fifteen doors it began to rain so we were obliged to stop tracting. We called on a lady who is friendly and had a talk with her at the door. she didn't invite us in as it wasn't her home, but we had a nice talk and left. We went to the Hall. Had a joiner fix the hall windows. Then we called on a Mrs. Johnson, a friend. From her home we went to Bro. Armstrong's a few minutes. Then to Mutual.

I did not have a very successful day tracting as the district had a rough class of people who didn't care for religion. We spent tea time at Sister Taylor's. From there we spent the evening at Mr. Sander's. I done [did] some writing for him.

They were going by the five train so we we set out afoot. We arrived there a little after four. In the evening the Saints came and we held our cottage meeting. After it we all walked back to Carslile.

Thanksgiving in Carlisle and a Trip to Gretna Green, Scotland
Friday, November 24, 1905.
After a forenoon's study we went tracting in a new district Denton Holme. I had good success. Met some fine people who were interested in my doctrines. When we finished came to lodge and found Elder Godfrey waiting for us. He has come from Hartlepool to spend a weekend with us. We had tea then called on Sister Walker. From there to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening. Elder Godfrey stopped there over night and Elder Rich and I returned to lodge.
Saturday, November 25, 1905. Carlisle.
We spent forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we went to Sister Atkinson's. As Elder Godfrey and Rich had never been through the Castle I took them there and the guide took us through. After spending an hour at the castle we went to the Carlisle Cathedral and attended services that were being held. From there we went through the Market place, went home, had tea, then went to the Cross and held a st. [street] meeting. Elders Godfrey & Rich spoke. From there we went to Garfield St. and held a cottage meeting at Mrs. Carrother's. There weren't many present. Elder Godfrey and I spoke. After meeting we went to Sister Atkinson's.

I spent the morning studying. In the afternoon we went to the hall and held our Sunday School. After which we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea. In the evening, we returned to services, had a nice meeting. Elder Godfrey spoke on the Book of Mormon. After meeting we held Choir practise.

Elders Rich, Godfrey, and I left Carlisle in the morning to go to Sister Porter's. Arrived there a[t] noon for dinner. In the evening the Saints came and we held a cottage meeting. Walked back to Carlisle afterwards. It was late when we arrived.

Spent the forenoon in studying and writing. Elder Godfrey came to the lodge in the morning at 9:30 [or 11:30?] and we accompanied him to the station. After dinner we went out tracting. When finished for the day we went to Sister Lightfoot's for tea. Thence to Choir practise in the evening.

Spent the forenoon at Lodge. In the afternoon went out tracting. Had good success. After having tea at Lodge we went to see Bro. Armstrong. From there to Mutual. We finished the Life of Christ Manual and assigned our next Lesson from the new Manual, The First Principals [Principles] of the Gospel 1901-1902 Manual.

Thanksgiving day. After tending to our morning's work we went to Sister Atkinson's. Helped them with their work. A nice dinner was prepared for us after which we had an enjoyable time together. In the evening we went to Stanwix to visit Heath's. Had a[n] enjoyable evening and a nice Gospel conversation.

This morning I made out the monthly report and sent it in. Spent the afternoon visiting, took tea at Sister Cook's. From there went to Mr. Walker's and practised some songs.

According to a mutual agreement we Elders Rich (https://history.churchofjesuschrist.org/missionary/individual/edward-stokes-rich-1886?lang=eng - he later married one of the Atkinson sisters - Eleanor Jane) and Neeley set out on a tin [ten?] mile trip Gretna Green (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gretna_Green) a noted place in Scotland for runaway marriages anciently. The walk was very pleasant and we enjoyed the trip through the Scotch [Scottish] villages and towns. Finally we arrived at Gretna about 1:30. We were very hungry so sought a Scotch shop. Bought 3 tea cakes and 2 pence cheese. Went to the R.R. [railroad] station, sat down, and ate the same. After taking the town sights we started back home. Arrived tired out. [Of] Course we didn't get married there, as we didn't see any one except a few old Scotch woman.

Today being rainy, we were unable to distribute tracts. So we did some visiting. We called on two families we met while tracting. But they wouldn't invite us in, so we went to see Sister Walker whom we heard was ill. From there we called on Sister Burthwick and Bro. Allen & family. From there to Choir practise at the Hall.

The forenoon was spent as usual in study. After dinner we went out tracting. Had good success. We went to Sister Lightfoot's for tea thence to Mutual at the Hall.
Thursday, December 7, 1905.
This forenoon we did some visiting. First called on Bro. & Sister Sanders. From there went to Sister Wetherall's and had a talk with her. On our return stopped in at Sister Atkinson's then to the Lodge. Had dinner and went out tracting. I met a Minister, but he refused to except [accept] a tract, closing the door in my face with the words - "I know my Gospel". We finished tracting and went to Newtown to visit a lady who was very ill, but she had heard of us Elders and the Gospel. We taught also the authority and power we claimed to have. Through her cousin who is a member of our church, so she requested us to visit her. We were taken to her sick room where a long Gospel conversation followed and she requested us to administer to her which we did, rebuking the disease, prayer on her system, in the name of the Lord. Leaving her place we called of [on] Mr. & Mrs. Reah, then went to Stanwix to see Heath's. They were not at home so we returned to Lodge.

We went tracting in the afternoon. When we finished we called on Mr. & Mrs. Tweddy a family I met while tracting, then on Sister Walker. We went to Sister Taylor's for tea and spent a pleasant evening.

In the evening we visited Mrs. Carrother's and gave her instructions as to getting baptized. From there we went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening.

I spent the morning studying the Sunday School lesson. At 2 P.M. we went to the Hall and had it in readiness for Sunday School. At 2:30 it commenced. We had a nice attendance. We only have three classes which are divided by curtains. Elder Rich teaches the Kindergarten, Sister Nellie Atkinson the First Intermediate, and Myself the Theological. After S.S. we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea. Returned to Meeting at 6:30. There was a good crowd gathered together. A good spirit prevailed. Spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.

This morning we prepared to go to Sister Porter's to spend the day. We were there in good time. After our four mile walk, Sister Porter made us welcome, prepared a nice dinner for us. In the evening we took a walk to Corly Bridge and back. Finally the Saints came and we held a our cottage meeting. Afterwards setting out on foot back to Carlisle. It was late when we arrived.

This morning we called to see a man, to have him clean our Hall windows. In the afternoon we went tracting. Had a fine afternoon. We went to Sister Cook's for tea. From there to the Hall to prepare for Mutual. Sister Nelson, the cousin we administered to, told me after we left the home of the lady we administered to, she fell into a deep sleep, even so much that her baby crying could not awaken her. Finally she awoke and all pain had left her. Soon she was up and about her work. This adds to my testimony as to the work I am engaged in.

We went to the Hall while the windows were being cleaned. We did some repairs also while there. In the afternoon we did some tracting. Took tea at Sister Wetheral's and spent part of the evening there, then went to Heath's and spent the remainder.

Today we went tracting. Met with fair success. I got mixed up with a lot of Catholics and received some ridicule and scoff. I couldn't hold them to the scriptures. They wouldn't except [accept] King James. We went to Newtown and called on the two Nelson families. From there to Carrother's, thence to Walker's and practised some songs.

Spent the forenoon studying. In the afternoon we went tracting a short time. Then went to Bro. Armstrong's for tea, thence to Sisters Lightfoot's & Atkinson's. Sister Lightfoot has moved from Upperby to 25 Regent Terr. of [a] few doors from Sister Atkinson's.

Studied in the morning. In the afternoon went to Sunday School. Came to lodge for tea, then to the Hall for our service. There were [was] a good attendance. After meeting choir practise convened. From it we went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the remainder of the evening.
After a forenoon's study we went tracting in a new district Denton Holme. I had good success. Met some fine people who were interested in my doctrines. When we finished came to lodge and found Elder Godfrey waiting for us. He has come from Hartlepool to spend a weekend with us. We had tea then called on Sister Walker. From there to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening. Elder Godfrey stopped there over night and Elder Rich and I returned to lodge.
Saturday, November 25, 1905. Carlisle.
We spent forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we went to Sister Atkinson's. As Elder Godfrey and Rich had never been through the Castle I took them there and the guide took us through. After spending an hour at the castle we went to the Carlisle Cathedral and attended services that were being held. From there we went through the Market place, went home, had tea, then went to the Cross and held a st. [street] meeting. Elders Godfrey & Rich spoke. From there we went to Garfield St. and held a cottage meeting at Mrs. Carrother's. There weren't many present. Elder Godfrey and I spoke. After meeting we went to Sister Atkinson's.

I spent the morning studying. In the afternoon we went to the hall and held our Sunday School. After which we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea. In the evening, we returned to services, had a nice meeting. Elder Godfrey spoke on the Book of Mormon. After meeting we held Choir practise.

Elders Rich, Godfrey, and I left Carlisle in the morning to go to Sister Porter's. Arrived there a[t] noon for dinner. In the evening the Saints came and we held a cottage meeting. Walked back to Carlisle afterwards. It was late when we arrived.

Spent the forenoon in studying and writing. Elder Godfrey came to the lodge in the morning at 9:30 [or 11:30?] and we accompanied him to the station. After dinner we went out tracting. When finished for the day we went to Sister Lightfoot's for tea. Thence to Choir practise in the evening.

We finished the Life of Christ Manual and assigned our next Lesson from the new Manual, The First Principals [Principles] of the Gospel 1901-1902 Manual.

Thanksgiving day. After tending to our morning's work we went to Sister Atkinson's. Helped them with their work. A nice dinner was prepared for us after which we had an enjoyable time together. In the evening we went to Stanwix to visit Heath's. Had a[n] enjoyable evening and a nice Gospel conversation.

This morning I made out the monthly report and sent it in. Spent the afternoon visiting, took tea at Sister Cook's. From there went to Mr. Walker's and practised some songs.

According to a mutual agreement we Elders Rich (https://history.churchofjesuschrist.org/missionary/individual/edward-stokes-rich-1886?lang=eng - he later married one of the Atkinson sisters - Eleanor Jane) and Neeley set out on a tin [ten?] mile trip Gretna Green (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gretna_Green) a noted place in Scotland for runaway marriages anciently. The walk was very pleasant and we enjoyed the trip through the Scotch [Scottish] villages and towns. Finally we arrived at Gretna about 1:30. We were very hungry so sought a Scotch shop. Bought 3 tea cakes and 2 pence cheese. Went to the R.R. [railroad] station, sat down, and ate the same. After taking the town sights we started back home. Arrived tired out. [Of] Course we didn't get married there, as we didn't see any one except a few old Scotch woman.

I studied my Sunday school Lesson this morning. At 1 P.M. went to the Hall and prepared for Sunday School. At 2:30 it commenced. Had a nice class. After S.S. we took tea at lodge. The[n] returned and had our services. A nice crowd was present and we enjoyed a good Spirit. After meeting we had a choir practise and from there went to No. 7 to spend the evening.

Monday, November 13, 1905. Middlesborough
Elder Jensen and I arose early this morning and went to Bruce Hall to attend Priesthood meeting. Pres. Grant was with us and listened to our reports. Afterwards gave us some good instructions in to our labours. During the meeting Pres. Adams was released to go home and Elder Taylor put in as Pres. [president] over the Conference. Elder McFarlane as secretary. After meeting, a number of us went to Sister Johnson's for dinner. We also spent the afternoon there. In the evening, the MIA [Mutual Improvement Association] of Middlesborough gave a party at the Cooperative Hall at which all Saints, Elders and friends gathered for an evening's enjoyment. A fine program was rendered. Refreshments were served and dancing was engaged in, by all the Elders who had to take a back seat and watch the others, "bondage". After spending a most pleasant evening Elder Everett and I went to Sister Riges to stop over night.
Tuesday, November 14, 1905. Middlesborough.
This morning we came to Bruces Hall to attend Priesthood Meeting. We all expressed ourselves as to our labours. Pres. Adams gave us some valuable instructions. Many changes were made in the branches. In regard to the Elders I was destined to continue my labors in Carlisle with Elder Rich as my companion. After Priesthood meeting, Elder Rich and I went to Sister Patterson's for dinner, after which we went to the office and myself, Sisters Atkinson and Porter prepared to leave for Carlisle. Elder Everett accompanied us to the train which left at 2 P.M. We came via Durham & Newcastle. We made connections at Darlington & Newcastle. Sister Porter got out a[t] Wetheral station. It was 7:30 when we arrived at Carlisle. I spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's

It seemed strange to be alone. I spent the forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon, I visited Sister Walker, then came home and studied my Mutual lesson. In the evening attended Mutual after which we held choir practise.

Called on Sister Atkinson this morning. Also Bro. Armstrong. In the afternoon went to Newtown. Visited Cooks and Nelsons. Thence to Stanwix to spend the evening at Heaths. Returned late.

The forenoon as usual was spent in study. In the afternoon we went out tracting. Met all kinds of people. Some were friendly and some were not. One man was going to have me banished, but notwithstanding the opposition, I enjoyed tracting. When finished for the day we went to Sister Taylor's to tea. In the evening attended Mutual.

Elder Everett's Farewell and Conference in Middlesborough
Sunday, November 5, 1905.
Spent the forenoon in study. At 2:30 we began our Sunday School. At the first part of the meeting, we confirmed those who had been baptized members of the Church. Elder Everett, Bro. Lightfoot, and I officiated. After the Confirmations the sacrament was administered unto them. The remaining part of the meeting was devoted to testimony bearing. A fine spirit was present and nearly all the new members bore their testimonies with tears in their eyes and we all rejoiced. In the evening, we again assembled for our evening service. We were all filled with joy. I spoke first after which Elder Everett spoke with spirit and power. We spent the time after meeting in Choir practise.

We spent the forenoon at lodge. At noon we called at Sister Atkinson's and from there we started out to Wetheral. After a five mile walk, arrived at Bro. Porter's. In the evening when the Saints had come, we held our cottage meeting. Afterwards returned home.

After doing some writing and other duties at Lodge we went to the Infirmary to visit Mrs. Armstrong. From there we went to Newtown. Visited Sister Nelson, thence to 10 Crummic [Crummick or Crummock] Terrace to visit Bro. & Sister Cook. These were some who were just brought into the church. Leaving Cook's we went to the hall where Choir practise convened. After a good practise, went to Sister Atkinson's then home.

Continued our visiting today. Having called on all our friends, Elder Everett bade them good bye. Spent the evening at Sis. Atkinson's.
Saturday, November 11, 1905. Conference.
This morning we took our early departure for Middlesborough, there being in company with us Sisters Atkinson and Porter. We went via Newcastle & Sunderland arriving at Middlesborough about noon. Went to 14 Dunning St. Met quite a number of the Elders and was assigned to dinner at Sis. Pattison's. Elder Wootton and I. Priesthood meeting was not held in the afternoon as Pres. Grant did not arrive. But in the evening we held five St. [street] meetings. Elders White, Jensen, and I went to Bro. Johnson's to stop over night.

Elder Jensen and I over slept, and in our hurry to the Cooperative Hall to attend morning session of Conference lost our way, therefore were late for meeting. Meeting commenced at 10:30. After sustaining of the general authorities of the church, the statistical report was read by Elder Taylor. Pres. Adams then welcomed all and spoke briefly on the Gospel. Elders Horace T. Godfrey and Walter G. Paul, on the necessity of living the Gospel. Pres. [Heber J.] Grant spoke on the Character of the Latter-day Saints. Meeting adjourned till 2:30. In the afternoon session, Elders Robert Hazen and J.A.F. Everett spoke on blessing received through fasting and prayer and obeying the commandments of the Lord. Pres. Grant then spoke on the Divine mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith, urging the Saints to live their religion. Meeting then adjourned till 6:30 P.M. At the evening service, the speakers were Elders Matthias W. Lowe, William White, and James McFarlane. Pres. Grant then spoke [on] the work being done by the Elders, and that people should pay heed to the message brought to them. During the services, sacred solos and inspiring music was rendered by the Middlesborough choir. Sister Sarah Ridge, Alice Bird and Pres. Grant rendering solos. The conference was a treat and all present enjoyed a Spiritual treat. I offered closing prayer. After meeting a number of us Elders were invited down to Sister Bird's, a nice tea was prepared for us. The evening was spent in singing and having a sicable [sp? - sociable] time. Elder Jensen and I returned to Bro. Johnson's to stop over night.

In the forenoon we went and paid the monthly Hall rent and transacted some more business, then returned to Lodge. Pres. and Elder Taylor were at Lodge. We took dinner together, then started for Wetheral. We waited on the Warwick bridge for the Atkinson's to join us. We played ball on our way out. Also got permission of a man to go into his carrot and turnip patch to get some to eat. When we all secured a carrot and turnip each, we went onward eating as we went. People who passed no doubt wondered what was up or if we were cannibals. We took some pictures with the Kodak of the company who were as follows: Pres. Adams, Elders Everett & Taylor, Sister Atkinson and her four daughters, Maud, Nellie, Hannah, Lily, and I. It was about 3 P.M. when we arrived at Bro. Porters where we spent a pleasant evening. After a nice supper that was prepared by Sister Porter, we assembled in a large room and held a cottage meeting. Elder Taylor and Pres. Adams spoke. Had a nice meeting. After it was out, we took our journey back to Carlisle. After stopping at Sister Atkinson's for supper we came home it being 12 P.M. [probably 12 A.M.] when we retired.

About 9:30, Pres. Adams and Elder Taylor came to Lodge to get ready to leave. We took them to the station and they took the 10:8 [sp?] train for Newcastle. We took our laundry up to Sister Atkinson's then called on Mrs. Sanders for a few moments, then went to Sister Taylor's, took dinner with them, then came home and spent the afternoon and evening at Lodge writing and studying.

Spent the forenoon at Lodge. In the afternoon we went tracting. In the evening we went to Mutual. After Mutual we held a Choir practise.

We spent the forenoon tracting. In the evening we called at Sister Atkinson's a few minutes, then went to Newtown to visit Nelson's. It was raining quite hard and we got wet. After spending a pleasant afternoon there we set out for Stanwix to visit Heath's. We took tea with them and had a nice evening.

Spent the forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we went up to Harraby Green and done some tracting. When we finished tracting we went to Sister Taylor's and spent the evening.
Saturday, October 28, 1905.
We went to Upperby to see Sister Lightfoot, [but] she was not home so we returned to Lodge. Had dinner, then went to call on some investigators. We first called at Mrs. Grassby's then to Mrs. Persival's, thence to Mrs. Walkders, thence to Carrothers, from there we went up Wickton [Wigton?] Road to visit Mr. and Mrs. Cook who had moved from Newtown to No. 10 Crumwick [sp?] Terrace. After spending the evening there we came home.

We tended to our usual duties. At 2:30 held our Sunday school and in the evening at 6:30 held our meeting. There was a good crowd present. I presided. Elder Everett was first speaker subj. [subject] Baptism. I then spoke on the Necessity of Repentance before Baptism. After meeting we spent the evening No 7 Regent Terrace.

We arose this morning and went up to Sister Atkinson's and helped them paper their house [wall paper?]. It took us nearly all day. While working I received a bump on the eye which gave me a black eye. In the evening we held a cottage meeting at Cook [Cook's house], Wickton [Wigton] Road.

In the forenoon we remained at Lodge and studied. In the afternoon we went out tracting. I had a successful afternoon and had some fine conversations. In the evening we met at the hall for Choir practise.

This morning we set out to visit some of the Saints. First called at Sister Atkinson's. From there went to Upperby to see Sister Lightfoot. We spent the afternoon with her then returned to Carlisle and called on a Mr. Sanders and had a conversation with him and before leaving got his consent to let us baptize his son and daughter who had been attending our Sunday School and deserved baptism. Their mother was also desirous of them becoming members of the church. Leaving there I went to the Corporation Baths to engage a pool for the following Saturday at which time we decided to hold the Baptisms. After making the necessary arrangements at the baths, I went to the Hall where we held our Mutual, from there home.
Thursday, November 2, 1905.
This morning we went to Stanwix to see Mr. & Mrs. Heath. After giving them a call we returned to the Lodge, had dinner, then went down to the Carlisle Courts as they were on and we desired to see how they were conducted. We were escorted to the gallery of the courtroom by a policeman. (Its only privilege characters who see the courts of England) The court officials appeared as follows. The stern judge stern set in an elevated seat draped in his robes of red and white. He was quite distinguished from the other members. He also wore a wig which neatly adorned his head. His words were stern and decisive. In front of him was a large round table at which sat eight or ten lawyers in a semicircular position facing the judge. They also were in robes and wigs unlike the judge. The jury of twelve men occupied a separate place to the left of the judge. The prisoners sat first back of the lawyers guarded by two policemen. The case that was on was a man charged with felony. The lawyer who plead his case appealed to the feelings of the jury, but his argument was poor. When he finished the judge said: "Well you have been talking a long while, but haven't proven anything." The jury rendered the verdict guilty. Judge said eighteen months hard labour. On leaving court we went to visit Mrs. Wetheral and family. Had tea with them, then went to visit Mr. & Mrs. Cook.

This morning we went to Sister Atkinson's and assisted them in white washing, painting, and other odd jobs about their home. In the evening we went to visit Sister Walker. Mr. Walker was home and he gave us a music practise. From Walker's we went to visit Mrs. Carrothers then home.

Today being set apart for our baptisms we had much to do as we desired to visit many of the candidates and have a talk with them and get their genealogy. We first visited Mrs. Nelson of Newtown. From there Mr. and Mrs. Cook then retuned to Carlisle and visited Mrs. Grassby, Bro. Armstrong, and Mr. Anderson. We fasted all day that our work might be a success. Leaving Mr. Anderson's, we came home, had supper, then went to Sister Atkinson's. There was one family by the name of Wetheral, the mother, a son, and daughter wished to be baptized, but the father would not give consent. They tried every way to get him to consent, but he refused on every hand. A day or two before the baptisms, the Saints and we Elders fasted and prayed that his heart might be softened. Our prayers were answered when Elder Everett and I went to his shoemaker shop and talked to him. He gave his consent and all were made to rejoice. A little after 8:30 P.M. Saturday, Nov. 4, 1905 a host of friends and Saints gathered around the pool (in the Carlisle Corporation Baths) where the sacred ordinance was performed. Prayer was offered, praises were [sung], after which I spoke upon the sacredness and [importance] of it to our Salvation. Thirteen honest-hearted souls were left into the waters of Baptism. Elder J.A.F Everett, my companion officiating. We all felt to rejoice and thank our Heavenly Father. This completed the day's labor.
In the forenoon we went and paid the monthly Hall rent and transacted some more business, then returned to Lodge. Pres. and Elder Taylor were at Lodge. We took dinner together, then started for Wetheral. We waited on the Warwick bridge for the Atkinson's to join us. We played ball on our way out. The Regent Laundry (aka the Atkinson's aka 7 Regent Terrace) and Sewing Dresses
Monday, October 9, 1905. Carlisle.
In the forenoon we studied the Manual lesson. In the afternoon we went up to Sister Atkinson's and from there we went out to Wetheral to attend a cottage meeting at Bro. Porter's. After arriving we had tea, later the Saints came and at 7:30 we began our meeting. We treated the Godhead as it is outlined in the Manual and all present were edified. At the close of the meeting we set out to talk home. It was after 11 P.M. when we arrived at Carlisle.
Tuesday, October 10, 1905. Carlisle.
In the forenoon we studied. And int he afternoon we went tracting. After returning, we went up to Newtown to visit Nelson's and Cook's. Spent the evening. Very pleasant. Sister Atkinson, Hannah & Nellie were there also. We came home late in the evening.

Continued our usual routine of work, study in the morning and tracting in the afternoon. In the evening we attended Mutual which was well attended. After Mutual we came home.

In the forenoon we went tracting. In the afternoon we went to Newtown. Visited Mrs. Nelson an had a talk with her about her baptism and others we were going to take place. Leaving there called on Mr. Reah (sp?), a Gospel Hall man, who was ill. He requested us to pray with him, which we did. After leaving there, we went to Stanwix to spend the evening with Mr. Heath. We had a pleasant evening, a nice tea was prepared for us. We sang hymns and conversed on the Gospel quite late. We came home.

In the forenoon we called on Bro. Andrew Armstrong who was just out of the Infirmary. From there called at No. 7 Regent Terr. Had a talk with Sister Atkinson, then went on to Upperby to see Bro. Lightfoot and family. Leaving there we came to Lodge, had dinner, then went out tracting. Our labours were confined to the poor class or the slums. We seen [saw] some awful sights of suffering and want among the poor and I felt that they needed temporal food rather than spiritual, or to make it complete both. After finishing we came home, had tea, two friends came to visit us who are investigating the Gospel (Mr. Anderson and Mr. Irving) We had a pleasant evening.

Spent the fore and afternoon at Lodge writing and reading. In the evening we went up to Sister Atkinson's and spent the evening.
Sunday, October 15, 1905. Carlisle.
At 2:30 P.M. our Sabbath school convened, there being a good attendance. After school we came home to tea, then at 6 P.M. retained to meeting. There was a good attendance of Saints and strangers. I presided. Elder Everett was first speaker, subj Plan of Salvation. After he finished I spoke upon the cause of religious confusion. We did not hold a street meeting as the weather was so cold. After the meeting we spent the evening at No. 7 Regent Terr.

In the morning Elder Everett and I took our laundry to Regent Laundry. We spent the greater part of the day there. Elder Everett done [did] some painting for Sister Atkinson and I assisted Sister Hannah in making some dresses. We sewed twenty yards of brush edging on four skirts. In the evening we came to lodge, got our books and tracts and went to Newtown. Called on Mr. Reah, then went to Mr. Cook's and held a cottage meeting. Elder Everett spoke first on the Divinity of the Book of Mormon. I then spoke on the first principles of the Gospel. After meeting we came home.
Tuesday, October 17, 1905. Carlisle.
Spent the forenoon at Lodge. In the afternoon we went out tracting. Had good success. In the evening, we went to the Drill Hall to hear McNeal the Presbyterian revivalist speak. He had a congregation of about four hundred. They first sang, then he called on the congregation to all bow their heads and pray. He used some awful expressions such as these Pray! Pray!! Pray!!! That God will give Carlisle such a shaking up she has never had before and may he send a great revival among the people. After this they sang again and McNeal arose and spoke on the 19th chapter of Luke, intermingling with the text tricky stories and cunning expressions to blind the minds of the people and lead them from the true Gospel plan to the erroneous doctrine of Justification by Faith alone. And he said if baptisms saves a person, the bishops had better get a hose and turn it on the people. He had a majority of the people enthused and worked up to such a pitch they were ready to unite with his dogmas. At the door as we went out [there] were envelopes passed containing a blank which was to be filled out by an individual who wished to be saved. The collecting box was passed before he preached his sermon and just before the meeting was out they indulged in the moanings and groanings of prayer. We came home.

In the forenoon we went to Sister Atkinson's then on to Mrs. Wetherel's to get out Manual. From there we came home. Studied our Mutual Lesson. Had dinner. Then went out tracting. At 7:30 we began Mutual. I presided. All present took their parts well. After Mutual we held a Choir practise. Mr. Walker formerly a member of the Cathedral Choir offered his service to become our Choir leader and we accepted his offer. Therefore he arranged the choir and gave us a practise. We came home after practise was out.

In the afternoon we called on Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Perseby of Lime St. Returning from there went to Upperby to visit Bro. & Sister Lightfoot. Had supper with them, then came as far as Sister Atkinson's and stopped in a short time, thence on home.

We studied in the forenoon. At 4:25 we went to the station and met Pres. Adams and Elder Taylor. From the station we came to lodge and had tea. In the evening we went up to Sister Atkinson's and spent a few hours. We sang and played games. Had a good time. Pres. Adams and I came to lodge to sleep and Elder Everett & Taylor remained at Sister Atkinson's.

Spent the forenoon at Lodge. In the afternoon Elder Taylor and I went to Newtown to see Mrs. Nelson. After paying them a short visit we called on Mr. Reah. From there we came home. Pres. Adams and Elder Everett had just returned form a visit to Mr. Walker's. We all took tea together then went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening. I was not feeling well, but has a nice time considering. Elder Taylor and I came to lodge to sleep. Pres. and Elder Everett stopped at Sister Atkinson's.

We spent the forenoon at Lodge. At 2:30 we commenced our Sunday School. Elder Everett presided. The classes separated for their class work. Pres. and Elder Taylor visited the different departments. After the classes reassembled, Elder Taylor and Pres. Adams spoke a short time approving of the good work and spirit attending the Carlisle Sunday School. Also gave us some valuable instructions. After S.S. Elder Everett and I went to Lodge for tea and Pres. Adams and Elder Taylor went to Sister Atkinson's. At 6:30 we commenced our services at the hall there being a good attendance. Elder Taylor first speaker Subj. Faith and Works. Pres. Adams then spoke on Rev. 12 Chapter. After meeting we spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.

We studied in the forenoon. At 4:25 we went to the station and met Pres. Adams and Elder Taylor. From the station we came to lodge and had tea. In the evening we went up to Sister Atkinson's and spent a few hours. We sang and played games. Had a good time. Pres. Adams and I came to lodge to sleep and Elder Everett & Taylor remained at Sister Atkinson's.
Saturday, October 21, 1905. Carlisle.
Spent the forenoon at Lodge. In the afternoon Elder Taylor and I went to Newtown to see Mrs. Nelson. After paying them a short visit we called on Mr. Reah. From there we came home. Pres. Adams and Elder Everett had just returned form a visit to Mr. Walker's. We all took tea together then went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening. I was not feeling well, but has a nice time considering. Elder Taylor and I came to lodge to sleep. Pres. and Elder Everett stopped at Sister Atkinson's.
Sunday, October 22, 1905. Carlisle.
We spent the forenoon at Lodge. At 2:30 we commenced our Sunday School. Elder Everett presided. The classes separated for their class work. Pres. and Elder Taylor visited the different departments. After the classes reassembled, Elder Taylor and Pres. Adams spoke a short time approving of the good work and spirit attending the Carlisle Sunday School. Also gave us some valuable instructions. After S.S. Elder Everett and I went to Lodge for tea and Pres. Adams and Elder Taylor went to Sister Atkinson's. At 6:30 we commenced our services at the hall there being a good attendance. Elder Taylor first speaker Subj. Faith and Works. Pres. Adams then spoke on Rev. 12 Chapter. After meeting we spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.
