The commencement of my labor in Penrith

Tuesday, April 3, 1906.  Penrith. Fine day.

This being the commencement of my labor in Penrith (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrith,_Cumbria) it will be in order to describe the town and its surroundings. Its population is about ten thousand. The principal occupation being Marketing center for the surrounding country district. It is situated on the London and North Western R.R. It is also near England's noted Lake District. Tourists find Penrith to be a convenient place to stop while visiting the las and castles that are close to it. Rising to the east of the town is a hill which rises quite high called the Beacon Pike. It is covered with timber. Also has a monument on it which was used for the Beacon lights anciently. It is quite historic on that account. From it Cromwell spread destruction within range blowing to pieces the Brougham Castle [and] also the Penrith Castle, the ruins of which still remain to tell the tale. The Eamont River runs near Penrith which divides Cumberland from Westmorland. Pres. John Taylor spent his boyhood days in Penrith.

I left Carlisle on the 1 PM train. Arriving here I spent the afternoon arranging things at lodge. In the evening I went and called on a family by the name of Robinson. Had a chat. In the evening Elder Owen arrived from Sunderland.

Wednesday, April 4, 1906.  Penrith. Fine day.

This morning we took a walk up to the Cemetery. Returning we done some work, stamping tracts and other odd jobs. After dinner we set out to do our first tracting, commencing over the R.R. bridge west of Penrith. We met with good success. Found the people to be of a higher and more refined class then is prevalent in most towns of England. After completing our day's tracting, we returned to lodge and spent the evening writing.

Thursday, April 5, 1906.  Penrith. Fine day.

We spent the forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we went tracting, meeting with some indifference. We also noticed many of the ministers out among their people. I don't know whether it was on our account or not, but rather think it was. When finished tracting we returned to lodge. Had tea then took a walk down to the Eamont River. Visited the Brougham Castle which was left in a ruined state by Cromwell. From there we visited the Brougham Hall which is a very elaborate structure on an eminence above the river, its occupants being Gentleman and Lady Brougham. From there we returned to lodge.

A good spirit was in our midst... This finishes my labors in Carlisle.

Friday, March 30, 1906.  Carlisle

Today I done some papering and painting for Sister Atkinson. In the evening Elder Wootton & Rich called and we three went to Newtown and called on the two Nelson families. We also went to Mrs. Carruther's and administered to her daughter Lizzie who was ill. Elder Rich and I stopped at lodge overnight.

Saturday, March 31, 1906.  Carlisle

I spent the forenoon at lodge packing my trunk. In the afternoon I went visiting friends I made while tracting. I also called on a number of Saints. In the evening we, Wootton, Rich & Neeley held two street meetings, one at the Cross and the other at the Court house. After meetings we spent the remaining part of the evening at Sister Atkinson's. Elder Wootton and I came to lodge to stop over night. Elder Rich stopped at Sister Atkinson's.

Sunday, April 1, 1906.  Carlisle

We spent the forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we went to Sunday School. It being fast day, my class engaged in Testimony baring. A good spirit was in our midst. After S.S. we went to Sister Cook's for tea. We returned to the Hall for services. Myself, Elders Wooton and Rich were the speakers. After meeting we had a Choir Practise. After it was out we went to Sister Atkinson's where I remained over night.

Monday, April 2, 1906.  Carlisle

This morning I went to lodge and prepared my trunk to sent it by advance luggage to Penrith. About 2 P.M. Elders Wooton, Rich and I met Sister Atkinson and daughters at the bridge on Warwick road, where we all went to Warwick together to hold cottage meeting at Bro. and Sister Porter's. Sister Walker later joined us on her wheel. We played ball all the way out, arriving there about 4 P.M. Tea was prepared. After tea we jumped the rope and played call till evening. When we were gathered in the parlour we held the meeting, it being a testimony meeting. After meeting we all walked back to Carlisle. I stopped at Sister Atkinson's. This finishes my labors in Carlisle.

Thursday, March 22, 1906.  Pelton

I stopped over night at Sister Wears. This morning after breakfast, I set out to call on my old friends. First called on Jordan's. From there went to West Pelton. Called on Sister Wailes and took dinner. From there to Sister Warren's, then to Grange villa. Visited Crowsers and took supper there. Then went to Sister Smith's where Mutual was held. The people were all glad to see me again. After Mutual Elder White and I weren't to Mr. Jordan's where we stopped over night.

Friday, March 23, 1906.  Pelton

This morning Elder White and I separated. I went to Waldrige Fell to visit Bro. & Sister Green. I returned to Grange Villa at noon. Took dinner at Sister Smith's, then Elder White and I went to Craghead and Bloomfountain. Visited Bros. and Sisters Chapman and Studham. We returned to Grange Villa. Called on Bro. Wiseman, then stopped over night at Sister Smith's.

Saturday, March 24, 1906.  Pelston and South Shields.

In the morning I called on all the Grange Cilla Saints, then went to Newfield. Alley on Wears and Jordans, then to Chester le St. Visited Sister Lindley. Went to the lodge where Elder White and I got ready and took the train to Low Fell. Took train from there to Newcastle. From there took train to South Shields. Our purport in going to Shields was to attend District Meeting there. Tonight we held some Street Meetings for the purport of distributing bills announcing the District Meetings. There were nine Elders present. We divided into two companions to hold meetings. Elders White, Mackay and I went to Jarrow with Elders Hazen and Smith to stop over night.

Sunday, March 25, 1906.  South Shields

We took a boat from Hebron Collery to South Shields. On arriving at the lodge met a number of the Elders who had come to attend District meeting. A Priesthood meeting was held where we all had a chance to report our labours. At 2:30 pm we attended the first session of District Meeting at St. Thomas off Ocean Road. The speakers were Pres. Taylor, Elders Wootton and Paul. Between 2:30 and 6:30 meetings a tea was prepared at the hall No. 8 Victoria Terrace Fowler St, where Elders, Saints, and friends went. At 6:30 the evening meeting commenced with a good attendance. The speakers were Pres. Taylor, Elders White, Neeley, Fairbanks, and Hazen. I went to Sunderland to stop with Elders Wooton, Fairbanks and Owen till Tuesday.

Monday, March 26, 1906.  Sunderland.

We remained at lodge till Noon. When Pres. Taylor came from Shield, we all went to Bro. Marshall's for dinner. He being manager of the Ferry over the Wear River. While there we seen a ship that had been wrecked and had drifted into the harbor. Leaving there we returned to lodge. Later we took Pres. Taylor and Elder Mackay to the train. They were going to Middleborough. Elder Wooton and I then went down to 2 St. Leonards St. and took tea with Mrs. Smith. Also spent the evening there, returning we retired.

Tuesday, March 27, 1906.  Sunderland and Carlisle.

Elder Wootton and I took the 10:50 train to Newcastle. Having an hour to wait for a train to Carlisle we went through the old castle. Left Newcastle for Carlisle at 1:18. Arriving in Carlisle we went to Sister Atkinson's. Had tea and spent the evening. Also went to Choir Practise. I returned there to stop over night.

I came to lodge time enough to take dinner with the brethren. In the afternoon we went out tracting. Met with good success. In the evening we went to Mutual. I stopped over night at the lodge with Elder Rich.

Thursday, March 29, 1906.  Carlisle and Penrith

Elder Wootton and I took the 9:55 train to Penrith. Our purpose in going was to hunt lodgings for myself and Elder Owen, we being appointed to open up a field of labor there. On arriving there we began searching for a place. After looking at two or three places we finally found a place that suited us at 22 Graham St. I engage the place now, we had finished this business, we took a look around the town, bought a lunch and went up on the Beacon Pike, a high eminent overlooking Penrith. There we ate dinner. From there we followed through the woods for some distance, then out into the open country. On our way passed the ruins of Brougham Castle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brougham_Castle) located on the banks of Emont river. It was destroyed by Cromwell's army. We continued on rill we arrived at Emont Bridge. From here we returned to Penrith and took the 4:15 train to Carlisle. In the evening called at Sis. Atkinson's where I stopped over night.

Monday, February 19, 1906.

We left Carlisle at 10:30 to go to Warwick Bridge End to visit Bro. & Sister Porter and hold a cottage meeting in the evening. We arrived and had dinner at Sister Porter's then spent the remainder of the time reading and studying. In the evening when the Saints came we held our meeting. When it was out we walked back to Carlisle. It rained all the way.

Tuesday, February 20, 1906.

After spending the forenoon writing my journal and home to my mother, we prepared some tracts and went tracting Denton Home. When finished we went to Sister Cooke's, thence to Newtown to see Mrs. Nelson. Returning to Sister Cook's for tea. In the evening we went to Choir practise.

Wednesday, February 21, 1906.

Done some studying in the forenoon. After dinner we went tracting with usual cold receptions. When finished we went to Sister Atkinson's. Had tea, then went to Mutual. The meeting was given over to the class in testimony bearing. We had a fine meeting. Nearly all present bore their testimonies. After meeting we returned to lodge.

Thursday, February 22, 1906.

Spent the forenoon at lodge studying and writing. In the afternoon we went tracting Denton home way. When finished we went to Sister Wetherell's for tea. After remaining there some time called on Mrs. Sander, then went to Stanwix and spent the evening at Heath's.

Friday, February 23, 1906.

The forenoon was spent at lodge. In the afternoon we went tracting. Had good success. When finished we went to Sister Taylor's for tea. From there we called on Sister Atkinson for a few moments. Then went to Sister Walker's where we spent a pleasant evening. There were two or three young people present besides us.

Saturday, February 24, 1906.

Today we prepared to go to Penrith on bikes. Elder Rich had Bro. Porter's wheel and I had Bro. Armstrong's, but when I came to try my wheel I found it was not in a condition to make the trip, so we gave up the idea of going and spent the day visiting among the Saints.

Sunday, February 25, 1906.

Studied my Sunday School lesson in the forenoon. At 2:30 held Sunday School. Went to Sister Atkinson's for tea. Returning to the Hall at 6:30 where we held evening service. There was quite a few present and we had a nice meeting. Bro. Porter spoke first then Elder Rich. I was the last speaker. After meeting we held a choir practise.

Monday, February 26, 1906.

In the forenoon I made out the monthly report and sent it in. After dinner I took a bath. In the evening we went to Sister Atkinson's. I pressed my Prince Albert.

Tuesday, February 27, 1906.

In the forenoon we went to Sister Cook's remaining there for dinner. From there went tracting at Denton Home. I received an invitation in a home and had a talk with a lady. When we had finished tracting we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea, it being Pancake Tuesday (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday). We celebrated the occasion by eating pancakes. In the evening we attended Choir Practise.

It being stormy we were unable to go tracting, but done considerable studying. We also went to Thurnam's book sale and received some find histories cheap. In the evening we took tea at Sister Lightfoot's. Then went to Mutual.

Thursday, March 1, 1906.

In the forenoon we went to Thurnam's Book Store (photo) to look at some second hand books. I ran on to four volumes of Mosheim [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Lorenz_von_Mosheim] Ecclesiastical History. Also a Smith's Dictionary of the Bible. I gave seven shillings for the lot. In the afternoon we went tracting. I was invited in at one place and had a nice talk with a lady. She invited me back. In the evening we visited Sister Wetherell and also Mr. Heath.

Friday, March 2, 1906.

Studied in the forenoon. In the afternoon went tracting. We had a cold reception as there had been a peace [piece] in the paper about "Mormonism exposed". All the people were up in arms about it. One man invited me in and how he did roast me, but I finally quieted him down by tell in [telling] him the opposite side of the story. When finished tracting we went to Newtown and Mr. Nelson gave it to us proper. We talked to him two hours and finally proved to him that the paper lied about us. In the evening we visited Persival's and Walker's.

Saturday, March 3, 1906.

I felt ill this morning on arising. In fact I have been under the weather for two weeks so I thought I would take a walk out in the country to Bro. Porter's for a change. Elder Rich said he would stop and do the work so I set of[f]. Arrived there at noon. The people were pleased to have me come and I was made welcome. They persuaded me to stop over night which I did.

Sunday, March 4, 1906.

It was a beautiful morning. Sister Porter and I set out at 11 o'clock to walk in to Carlisle. The walk was beautiful. We enjoyed it. I came to the lodge and got ready for Sunday School. Then Elder Rich and I went to the Hall and had things in readiness for 2:30. We had a nice school. My class engaged in testimony bearing. We took tea at Sister Atkinson's and in the evening held our meeting and Choir Practise.

Monday, March 5, 1906.

In the forenoon we done some studying & writing. In the afternoon we went tracting up at Trinity Buildings. From there we came to lodge. Had tea then went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening. Practised some songs that were going to be sung at a Birthday party the following Monday.

Tuesday, March 6, 1906.

In the forenoon we done some studying. After dinner we went tracting Hazal St. When finished went to Sister Sander's for tea. From there we called on Sister Lightfoot then went to Choir Practise.

Wednesday, March 7, 1906.

We spent the forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we called on a lady friend. Had a long talk with her, then went to Trinity Buildings to so some tracting, but it was so windy and stormy we gave over tracting after putting out a few. From there we came to lodge. Had tea and in the evening went to Mutual.

Thursday, March 8, 1906.

After writing a letter we went to Sister Lightfoot's to take dinner. We took tracts with us to do some tracting but it came on very stormy. We were unable to do any tracting, but spent out time visiting at Sister Atkinson's for a short time, then went to Newtown. Visited Sister Nelson, Mrs. Reah. From there to Sister Pane's thence to Stanwix. Visited Heath's.

Friday, March 9, 1906.

In the afternoon went tracting Gloucester Rd. Had fairly good success. Older man invited me in and I had a nice talk with him. When finished tracting we went to Sister Taylor for tea. From there we called on Bro. Armstrong then to Walker's where we spent a pleasant evening.

Saturday, March 10, 1906.

After spending the forenoon writing and studying we went tracting at Gloucester Rd. After finished we called on Mrs. Sander. Leaving her place we went down to Mrs. Carruther's. Took tea then returned to lodge and prepared to hold a street meeting. We had a nice meeting. I was first speaker. Elder Rich spoke last. A belief alone [someone who believes that it is faith alone that saves us] man tackled me after the meeting and we had an argument. When finished we went to Sister Atkinson's. Spent the evening.

I studied my Sunday School lesson in the forenoon. At 2:30 we held our Sunday School. After it we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea. At 6:30 PM we assembled at the Hall for services. Had a nice meeting. After it was out we held Choir Practise. From there we spent the remaining part of the evening at Sister Atkinson's.

Monday, March 12, 1906.  Carlisle.

We spent most of the day at Lodge studying and writing. Toward evening we went to Sister Lightfoot's then returned to lodge. Had tea, after which we went to the Hall to attend Sister Maude Atkinson's birth day party. We had an enjoyable evening with games, program, and refreshments.

In the morning called at Sister Atkinson's. From there we went to Warwick Bridge End to visit Bro. & Sister Porter. We spent the afternoon out there. Then we returned to Carlisle time enough for Choir Practise.

Wednesday, March 14, 1906.

We done some calling in the forenoon. In the afternoon we went tracting at Trinity Buildings. Took tea with Bro. & Sister Cooke then came to the Hall for Mutual. We had quite a nice meeting, although some didn't study their lesson enough.

Thursday, March 15, 1906.

The weather has been bad all day so we didn't venture out to do any tracting. Late in the afternoon we done some calling. Called on Sister Atkinson and Sister Wetherell. Then we went to Mrs. Sanders. From there we went to Stanwix to spend the evening at Heath's.

Friday, March 16, 1906.

We Elders Rich and Neeley spent the forenoon at lodge reading and writing. The forenoon was very stormy. In the afternoon we called on a Mrs. Johnson an investigator and she consented to be baptized. We also called on Sis. M.L. Jones on business. In the evening as we were going to visit a family of Saints we met Pres. Taylor and Elder Paul. We returned to lodge with them and had tea. Then went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening.

Saturday, March 17, 1906.

Elders Paul and Rich stopped at Sister Atkinson's over night. Pres. and I came to lodge. The main object of Pres. visit was to open up a field of labor in Penrith. I being one chosen to labor there. After spending the forenoon at Carlisle showing our visitors around to points of interest such as the Castle and Cathedral, we took an afternoon train to Penrith. Arriving there we called on some friends we knew then looked around the town. Taking in some points of interest we also tried to find a lodge for myself and companion when we went there to labor. We found one nice place and partly bargained for it. We returned to Carlisle on an evening train time enough to hold a St. meeting. After the meeting we went to Sis. Atkinson's where Pres. and I remained over night.

Sunday, March 18, 1906.  Carlisle.

This morning Pres. Taylor and I came to lodge and got ready to attend the Baptismal service that was to be held in the Corporation baths. We and Saints, also friends, witnessed the baptism of five candidates. The service was impressive. Elder Paul and Pres. Taylor spoke very encouragingly and to the occasion. Elder Rich my companion performed the ordinance. The confirmation took place at the Sunday School held in the Hall at 2:30. We took tea at Atkinson's then returned to the Hall to hold services. The Hall was crowded. Pres. Taylor & Elder Paul were the speakers. The choir rendered beautiful music. All enjoyed the service fine. After it we held a st. meeting.

Monday, March 19, 1906.  Carlisle.

Today we spent out time visiting the saints as it was Pres. Taylor's desire to call on them at their homes. We took dinner at Sister Taylor's and tea at the lodge. Spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.

Tuesday, March 20, 1906.  Carlisle and Jarrow.

Pres. Taylor and I took the 10-8 train for Newcastle today. Elder Paul stopped with Elder Rich at Carlisle. We arrived at Newcastle and took a boat to Jarrow. Found Elders Hazen and Smith at their lodge. They had dinner prepared for us. Then Pres. Taylor and Elder Haven went to Newcastle to meet Miss Nannie Tout, but she didn't come. Elder Smith and I spent the evening visiting the Jarrow Saints. Took tea at Bro. Thor Thompson's then called on Bro. & Sister Teasdale, also Bro. & Sis. Scott. Leaving there we returned to lodge where the four of us stopped all night.

Wednesday, March 21, 1906.  Jarrow.

This morning Elder Smith and I went down to Palmer Ship yards and got permission to go through. We spent two hours there most interestingly. This company employ[s] eleven thousand men. The guide took us through all the workshops. Also through a number of large steamer that were under course of construction. One of these being the Lord Nelson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Lord_Nelson_(1906)), one of the largest Man of War's afloat. After seeing all through we returned to lodge for dinner. After dinner Pres. Taylor and I went to Newcastle to see if Miss Nannie Tout had arrived as she was going to sing in a concert at Newcastle tonight. We went to the Town Hall and there found her rehearsing her part. After practise she spoke. Invited us to tea with her. In the evening many of the Elders came from their different fields of labor to attend the concert. We all had a good time and attended the concert. When it was out, I went to Pelton with Elder White to spend a few days.

Tuesday, January 30, 1906.

We done a little studying in the morning. Then we went to the Corporation baths and had a swim.  From there we went to Sister Atkinson's.  Took dinner and tea.  Elder Rich worked at the poth stick.  I didn't do anything to speak of. In the evening we went to the Hall to hold our Choir Practise.

Wednesday, January 31, 1906.

Spent the forenoon studying the Mutual Lesson.  In the afternoon we went to Wigton and began to tract. It with first tract found an indifferent class of people there.  All though [Although] there were two or three who were willing to listen to the message, when finished we went to Sister Lightfoot's then home. Had tea and went to Mutual. From there home.

Thursday, February 1, 1906.

We spent the forenoon studying. In the afternoon we done some tracting. I found a lady who had been friendly with the Elders for years. I had a good talk with her and she took me to see her mother. Was bedfast [bedridden]. She was 88 years of age. When finished tracting we went to Sister Wetherell's. Had tea then went to Stanwix and spent the evening at Heath's.

Friday, February 2, 1906.

We spent the forenoon studying. In the afternoon we went tracting. It was bitter cold and we finished tracting early. Went to Sister Cook's. Had tea. From there went to Newtown. Found no one home. So we returned to town and called on Persival's then went to Walker's and spent the evening.

Saturday, February 3, 1906.

In the forenoon we studying. After dinner we done some calling. Our first visit was on [at] Mrs. Carruther's. From there we called on Bro. & Sister Armstrong. Thence on Mrs. Sander. Had a conversation with her husband. From there we went to Sister Lightfoot's. Had tea and from there to Sister Atkinson's. Spent the evening.

Sunday, February 4, 1906.

Spent the forenoon studying. At 1 P.M. we went to the Hall and prepared for Sunday School. At 2:30 it commenced. Elder Rich presided. My class spent the time in testimony bearing. A fine spirit prevailed. We went to Sister Atkinson's for tea then returned to evening service. We had a nice meeting. After it held Choir Practise. Then went to no. 7. Spent the evening and came home.

Monday, February 5, 1906.

This morning we went to Newtown to visit Sister Nelson and others. Found them well and when finished visiting we went to Sister Cook's. Took dinner and then began tracting the Trinity buildings. When we had finished tracting we came to lodge. Then went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening.

Tuesday, February 6, 1906.

We spent the forenoon at lodge studying and writing. In the afternoon we went tracting. I met a man who threatened to kick me of [off] from his premises. I tried to talk and reason with him but no use. I was forced to leave with ought [without] removing from his mind the gross false hood and delusion regarding us Mormons. When finished tracting we went to Sister Taylor's for tea, then to Choir practise.

This morning we took some tracts and books and set out for Wetherell, tracting as we went. We finished all the houses on Warwick Rd. and it was noon when we arrived at Bro. Porter's. Had dinner and stopped a few hours there. Then we done some tracting in Warwick Village. When finished returned to Carlisle. Called a short time at Sister Atkinson's then went to Mutual.

Thursday, February 8, 1906.

The weather is clear but a very cold wind blowing. We were unable to do any tracting. After spending the forenoon at lodge we spent the afternoon visiting friends and Saints. Visited a Miss White, Wethereall's, Heath's and Lightfoot's then came to lodge and retired.

Friday, February 9, 1906.

Spent forenoon at Lodge. In the afternoon we went tracting Gloucester Rd. Met with fair success. When completed we went to Newtown. Visited Nelson's and Reay's. Had a Gospel conversation at each place. Leaving Newtown we came down to Sister Walker's and spent the evening.

In the forenoon I studied the S.S. lesson. In the afternoon we went to Carruther's. Took tea. From there we went to Mrs. Sander's for a short time and then to Sister Atkinson's. Took supper and spent the evening.

After spending the morning in study we went to the Hall and prepared for Sunday school which was held with a good attendance. We went to tea at Sister Atkinson's and in the evening held our service which was well attended. After meeting Choir Practise was held.

Monday, February 12, 1906.

After spending the forenoon at lodge we ventured tracting. The weather was quite cold. We began [at] Denton Home with third tracts. I met some who were friendly but others were very distant. When finished we visited Bro. Armstrong. Returning to lodge for tea. Then we spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's. (?????)

Tuesday, February 13, 1906.

Spent the forenoon and part of the afternoon at lodge. Sister Atkinson called on us and we had a long talk over a little trouble that had occurred between us and members at No. 7. All was made right; although unpleasant at the time, in the evening we took tea at Sister Atkinson's, then went to hold Choir Practise. From there home.

We done some studying in the forenoon. After dinner we went tracting. Continuing our labours in Denton Home. When finished we took a walk up to the Cemetery. Then back to Sister Cook's where we had tea. Later we left to prepare the Hall for Mutual.

Studied in the forenoon. In the afternoon went tracting Denton Home. In the evening went to Stanwix. Spent the evening with Heath's.

Friday, February 16, 1906.

Our forenoon was spent as usual at lodge studying, writing and reading. After dinner we set out to do some tracting. Met with good success with some exceptions of ridicule. When finished tracting we went to Newtown. Visited the Nelson's. Took tea at Sister Nelson's. Later came to lodge where we spent the evening.

We called on a number of the Saints during the day. Our first visit being at Sister Lightfoot's where we took dinner. Leaving there we called on Sister Sander's for a short time. Later we called on Bro. Armstrong then went to Sister Atkinson's. Spent the evening.

Sunday, February 18, 1906.

We done some studying till 1 o'clock at which time we went to the Hall and prepared for Sunday school. It being a nice day many attended the school and fine spirit prevailed. We took tea at Sister Atkinson's. And at 6:30 P.M. reassembled for evening service. The Hall was crowded to its utmost. A fine spirit was present. Elder Rich spoke first upon the First Principles. Then I spoke on the Godhead. After meeting we had Choir Practise.

Wednesday, January 10, 1906.

In the forenoon we did some writing and studying.  It was very cold, so we did not go tracting in the afternoon, but done [did] considerable visiting among some friends we made while tracting.  We had conversations with them and left some books and tracts wherever we could. We spent a pleasant afternoon, met some fine people.  In the evening we went to Sister Taylor's, had tea, and spent a pleasant afternoon. From Sister Taylor's we went to the Hall to hold Mutual. We had a nice meeting.  Lesson was hard No. 4 in 1901-1902 Manual, "Erroneous Ideas of the Godhead".  While at Mutual we heard Bro. Sander was very sick, so we went up after meeting.  When we got there found he was very bad. We all knelt in prayer as to his request, then we anointed him but he grew worse and worse and we could see that life was nearly ended. At 11:20 he peacefully passed away. Bro Sander was 68 yrs. old. Had belonged to the church about two years. He had been afflicted for three years with a disease which completely racked his nervous system, therefore he had been a great sufferer, but he was a good man and loved the Gospel.

Thursday, January 11, 1906.

In the forenoon we went to Sister Atkinson's. Remained there for some time. From there we went to Newtown. Visited the two Nelson families, also Reay's. From there we went to Sister Cook's, had tea. Spent a few hours. From there we went to Stanwix to visit Heath's. It rained all the time we were going to Stanwix and we got quite wet. After a pleasant evening we came home and retired.

Friday, January 12, 1906.

Spent the forenoon in study. In the afternoon we went tracting. Had good success. When finished made some calls on friends. In the evening we visited the Vicar of St. Stephan's church, the Rev. Coplan. He had been reading the Book of Mormon. We had a two hour talk with him on the Gospel. After leaving his home we went to Sister Lightfoot's. Had supper. From there called on Sister Sander to see about the funeral.

Saturday, January 13, 1906.

Spent the forenoon at lodge studying. After dinner we went and engaged a cab for the funeral. In the evneing called at Sister Sander's. Then went to Sister Lighfoot's, had supper. Then to Choir Practise. From practise spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.

Sunday, January 14, 1906.  very windy.

Spent the forenoon at lodge studying. At 1:40 P.M. the cab called for us and drove us to the home of Sister Sander, where we were to join the funeral procession of Bro. Sander, as we were going to conduct the service. After driving to the cemetery, we held the service in the Decenter's [Dissenter's] Chapel (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Carlisle_Cemetery_Dissenters%27_Chapel#/media/File:Dissenters'_mortuary_chapel_-_geograph.org.uk_-_902684.jpg). The chapel was crowded full of people who seemed to be impressed with the service. After the service we went to the grave where we sang a Hymn and dedicated the grave. From the cemetery we drove to Sister Sander's where a tea was given. After the tea we went to the Hall to prepare for evening service. Our hall was crowded with people, many of them who were at the funeral being present. We had a nice meeting after which we had a Choir Practise. From there spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.

Monday, January 15, 1906.  Very Rainy.

This morning we started for Warwick to visit Bro. & Sister Porter. Soon after we started it began to rain. We only one small umbrella between us so before we reached Porter's we were wet, but there was a good fire and we soon dried and took dinner. In the evening, we were going to have cottage meeting but no one came, so we visited a man next door and had a long Gospel conversation. Late in the evening we started home.

Tuesday, January 16, 1906. Rainy.

In the forenoon we took our laundry to No. 7. Returning at noon, had dinner at Lodge, then went tracting. We had good success and when finished we went to Sister Cook's and took tea with them. Leaving there, we went to the Hall for Choir practise.

Wednesday, January 17, 1906.  Clear but cold.

Spent the forenoon in study. After dinner went tracting. Denton Home District had good success. Took tea at lodge then went to Mutual. Had a nice meeting.

Thursday, January 18, 1906.  Rainy.

Spent part of the forenoon at Lodge. Then we went to Sister Lightfoot to take dinner. After spending a few hours with them went up to Sister Wetherell's. Had tea and spent a pleasant evening. From there to Stanwix to visit Heath's.

Friday, January 19, 1906.  Fine day.

Today being an exceptional [ly] good day, we tracted both forenoon and afternoon. Met with fine success. After we had finished tracting we went to Newtown to do some visiting. Called on the two Nelson families and stopped a while. Then called on Mr. & Mrs. Reah. Leaving there we called on Persival's and Walker's then home.

Saturday, January 20, 1906.

Spent the forenoon at Lodge studying. In the afternoon we went visiting. We called at Mrs. Sander's and took tea. Leaving there we went to the book binders to get some Stars bound. From there we called on Mrs. Carruther's then on Bro. & Sister Armstrong. Leaving there we went to Sister Atkinson's where we spent the evening. It was the day after election; blue won.

Sunday, January 21, 1906.

Studied the Sunday School lesson in the forenoon. In the afternoon we attended Sunday School. Had a nice school after which we went to Sister Lightfoot's for tea. Returned in the evening to hold service, there was a good congregation and we enjoyed a nice meeting.

Monday, January 22, 1906.

Wrote a short time in the morning. Went to Sister Atkinson's and done [did] a few odd jobs such as whitewashing the shop ceiling, also put up a clothes rack. Took dinner and tea while there.

Tuesday, January 23, 1906.

Spent the forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we went tracting. Met with fair success. When finished we called Wetherell's shoemaker shop. Then on Sister Taylor. From there home. Had tea and went to Choir Practise in the Hall.

Wednesday, January 24, 1906.

Remained at lodge in the forenoon. In the afternoon went tracting. After visiting fifteen doors it began to rain so we were obliged to stop tracting. We called on a lady who is friendly and had a talk with her at the door. she didn't invite us in as it wasn't her home, but we had a nice talk and left. We went to the Hall. Had a joiner fix the hall windows. Then we called on a Mrs. Johnson, a friend. From her home we went to Bro. Armstrong's a few minutes. Then to Mutual.

Thursday, January 25, 1906.

Spent the forenoon studying. In the afternoon went tracting met with good success. When finished went to Sister Lightfoot's for tea. Sister Walker was there visiting so we spent a pleasant evening visiting.

Friday, January 26, 1906.

Spent the forenoon tracting. Came home to dinner. In the afternoon we continued tracting. I did not have a very successful day tracting as the district had a rough class of people who didn't care for religion. We spent tea time at Sister Taylor's. From there we spent the evening at Mr. Sander's. I done [did] some writing for him.

Spent the forenoon at lodge. In the afternoon we went down and called on Mrs. Carruther's. Took tea while there. From there went to Sister Cooke's and spent a few hours. Had supper. Sister Cooke made some broth for our special benefit. It was fine. From there we went to Sister Atkinson's and spent the evening.

Sunday, January 28, 1906.

I studied the Sunday School lesson in the forenoon. At 2:30 we held our Sunday School. There was a good attendance. After it was out we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea. In the evening at 6:30 all gathered at the Hall where we held our evening Service. Quite a number of strangers were present and we enjoyed a good spirit. The day was quite rainy. Choir Practise was held. After meeting and after it was we went to Sister Atkinson's for a short time.

Monday, January 29, 1906.

We made out our monthly reports this morning. When finished sent them in to Middlesborough. We then got ready to go to Warwick. On our way called in at Sister Atkinson's to see if they were going. They were going by the five train so we we set out afoot. We arrived there a little after four. In the evening the Saints came and we held our cottage meeting. After it we all walked back to Carslile.

Friday, November 24, 1905.

After a forenoon's study we went tracting in a new district Denton Holme.  I had good success.  Met some fine people who were interested in my doctrines.  When we finished came to lodge and found Elder Godfrey waiting for us.  He has come from Hartlepool to spend a weekend with us.  We had tea then called on Sister Walker. From there to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening.  Elder Godfrey stopped there over night and Elder Rich and I returned to lodge.

Saturday, November 25, 1905.  Carlisle.

We spent forenoon at lodge.  In the afternoon we went to Sister Atkinson's.  As Elder Godfrey and Rich had never been through the Castle I took them there and the guide took us through.  After spending an hour at the castle we went to the Carlisle Cathedral and attended services that were being held.  From there we went through the Market place, went home, had tea, then went to the Cross and held a st. [street] meeting.  Elders Godfrey & Rich spoke.  From there we went to Garfield St. and held a cottage meeting at Mrs. Carrother's.  There weren't many present.  Elder Godfrey and I spoke.  After meeting we went to Sister Atkinson's.

Sunday, November 26, 1905.  Carlisle.

I spent the morning studying.  In the afternoon we went to the hall and held our Sunday School.  After which we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea.  In the evening, we returned to services, had a nice meeting.  Elder Godfrey spoke on the Book of Mormon.  After meeting we held Choir practise.

Monday, November 27, 1905.  Carlisle.

Elders Rich, Godfrey, and I left Carlisle in the morning to go to Sister Porter's.  Arrived there a[t] noon for dinner.  In the evening the Saints came and we held a cottage meeting.  Walked back to Carlisle afterwards.  It was late when we arrived.

Tuesday, November 28, 1905.  Carlisle.

Spent the forenoon in studying and writing.  Elder Godfrey came to the lodge in the morning at 9:30 [or 11:30?] and we accompanied him to the station.  After dinner we went out tracting.  When finished for the day we went to Sister Lightfoot's for tea. Thence to Choir practise in the evening.

Wednesday, November 29, 1905.

Spent the forenoon at Lodge. In the afternoon went out tracting. Had good success. After having tea at Lodge we went to see Bro. Armstrong. From there to Mutual. We finished the Life of Christ Manual and assigned our next Lesson from the new Manual, The First Principals [Principles] of the Gospel 1901-1902 Manual.

Thursday, November 30, 1905.

Thanksgiving day. After tending to our morning's work we went to Sister Atkinson's.  Helped them with their work. A nice dinner was prepared for us after which we had an enjoyable time together. In the evening we went to Stanwix to visit Heath's. Had a[n] enjoyable evening and a nice Gospel conversation.

Friday, December 1, 1905.

This morning I made out the monthly report and sent it in. Spent the afternoon visiting, took tea at Sister Cook's. From there went to Mr. Walker's and practised some songs.

Saturday, December 2, 1905.

According to a mutual agreement we Elders Rich (https://history.churchofjesuschrist.org/missionary/individual/edward-stokes-rich-1886?lang=eng - he later married one of the Atkinson sisters - Eleanor Jane) and Neeley set out on a tin [ten?] mile trip Gretna Green (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gretna_Green) a noted place in Scotland for runaway marriages anciently. The walk was very pleasant and we enjoyed the trip through the Scotch [Scottish] villages and towns.  Finally we arrived at Gretna about 1:30. We were very hungry so sought a Scotch shop. Bought 3 tea cakes and 2 pence cheese.  Went to the R.R. [railroad] station, sat down, and ate the same.  After taking the town sights we started back home.  Arrived tired out.  [Of] Course we didn't get married there, as we didn't see any one except a few old Scotch woman.

Sunday, December 3, 1905.

I studied my Sunday school Lesson this morning. At 1 P.M. went to the Hall and prepared for Sunday School. At 2:30 it commenced. Had a nice class. After S.S. we took tea at lodge. The[n] returned and had our services. A nice crowd was present and we enjoyed a good Spirit. After meeting we had a choir practise and from there went to No. 7 to spend the evening.

Monday, December 4, 1905.

Studied in the forenoon. In the afternoon went out tracting. Went to Sister Atkinson's in the evening for tea. From there went to Sister Cook's. Held a cottage meeting. Afterwards had a Gospel conversation with Mr. Wilson.

Tuesday, December 5, 1905.

Today being rainy, we were unable to distribute tracts. So we did some visiting. We called on two families we met while tracting. But they wouldn't invite us in, so we went to see Sister Walker whom we heard was ill. From there we called on Sister Burthwick and Bro. Allen & family. From there to Choir practise at the Hall.

Wednesday, December 6, 1905.

The forenoon was spent as usual in study. After dinner we went out tracting. Had good success. We went to Sister Lightfoot's for tea thence to Mutual at the Hall.
 
Thursday, December 7, 1905.

This forenoon we did some visiting.  First called on Bro. & Sister Sanders. From there went to Sister Wetherall's and had a talk with her. On our return stopped in at Sister Atkinson's then to the Lodge. Had dinner and went out tracting. I met a Minister, but he refused to except [accept] a tract, closing the door in my face with the words - "I know my Gospel". We finished tracting and went to Newtown to visit a lady who was very ill, but she had heard of us Elders and the Gospel. We taught also the authority and power we claimed to have. Through her cousin who is a member of our church, so she requested us to visit her. We were taken to her sick room where a long Gospel conversation followed and she requested us to administer to her which we did, rebuking the disease, prayer on her system, in the name of the Lord. Leaving her place we called of [on] Mr. & Mrs. Reah, then went to Stanwix to see Heath's. They were not at home so we returned to Lodge.

Friday, December 8, 1905.

We went tracting in the afternoon. When we finished we called on Mr. & Mrs. Tweddy a family I met while tracting, then on Sister Walker. We went to Sister Taylor's for tea and spent a pleasant evening.

Saturday, December 9, 1905.

Spent the forenoon in study. In the afternoon we visited a second hand book stall, but could not find the book we wanted. Afterward went through the Museum which was very interesting. In the evening we visited Mrs. Carrother's and gave her instructions as to getting baptized. From there we went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening.

Sunday, December 10, 1905.

I spent the morning studying the Sunday School lesson. At 2 P.M. we went to the Hall and had it in readiness for Sunday School. At 2:30 it commenced. We had a nice attendance.  We only have three classes which are divided by curtains. Elder Rich teaches the Kindergarten, Sister Nellie Atkinson the First Intermediate, and Myself the Theological. After S.S. we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea. Returned to Meeting at 6:30. There was a good crowd gathered together. A good spirit prevailed. Spent the evening at Sister Atkinson's.

Monday, December 11, 1905.

This morning we prepared to go to Sister Porter's to spend the day. We were there in good time. After our four mile walk, Sister Porter made us welcome, prepared a nice dinner for us. In the evening we took a walk to Corly Bridge and back. Finally the Saints came and we held a our cottage meeting. Afterwards setting out on foot back to Carlisle. It was late when we arrived.

Spent a good afternoon tracting. In the evening took tea at Lightfoot's thence to Choir practise.

Wednesday, December 13, 1905.

This morning we called to see a man, to have him clean our Hall windows. In the afternoon we went tracting. Had a fine afternoon. We went to Sister Cook's for tea. From there to the Hall to prepare for Mutual. Sister Nelson, the cousin we administered to, told me after we left the home of the lady we administered to, she fell into a deep sleep, even so much that her baby crying could not awaken her. Finally she awoke and all pain had left her. Soon she was up and about her work. This adds to my testimony as to the work I am engaged in.

Thursday, December 14, 1905.

We went to the Hall while the windows were being cleaned. We did some repairs also while there. In the afternoon we did some tracting. Took tea at Sister Wetheral's and spent part of the evening there, then went to Heath's and spent the remainder.

Friday, December 15, 1905.

Today we went tracting. Met with fair success. I got mixed up with a lot of Catholics and received some ridicule and scoff. I couldn't hold them to the scriptures. They wouldn't except [accept] King James. We went to Newtown and called on the two Nelson families. From there to Carrother's, thence to Walker's and practised some songs.

Spent the forenoon studying. In the afternoon we went tracting a short time. Then went to Bro. Armstrong's for tea, thence to Sisters Lightfoot's & Atkinson's. Sister Lightfoot has moved from Upperby to 25 Regent Terr. of [a] few doors from Sister Atkinson's.

Studied in the morning. In the afternoon went to Sunday School. Came to lodge for tea, then to the Hall for our service. There were [was] a good attendance. After meeting choir practise convened. From it we went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the remainder of the evening.
