Scarborough

Wednesday, August 9, 1905.  Carlisle.

Spent the forenoon in the lodge, as it was quite rainy.  We didn't get out much.  In the evening we went to Newtown to visit Mrs. Nelson and sisters.  Found them all well.  Returning home, we went to No. 7 Regent Terrace to Mutual, after which we came home and retired.

Thursday, August 10, 1905.  Carlisle.

The forenoon was spent in the Lodge studying and writing.  In the afternoon we went tracting.  Met different classes of people.  Some were cold and indifferent.  Others civil.  All in all, met with good success.  In the evening, we went to Sister Taylor's.  Spent a pleasant evening, then called on Sister Lightfoot, then home.

Friday, August 11, 1905.  Carlisle to Scarborough.

Today we had a most enjoyable trip.  At 4:10 A.M. the train left the Carlisle station enrolee for Scarborough, one of England's famous watering placed.  In our apartment of the coach were Miss Jones, Miss Bashford, Bro. Fred Witherel, Elder Everett, and I.  It was 11 A.M. when we arrived at Scarborough.  We wfirst went to the sea side.  Arriving there, we found hundreds of people gathered on the sands engaging in different sports.  The main amusement was boating.  Others were donkey riding, washing in the sea, and other amusements.  Our company of five took a sail out on the sea.  It was delightful.  The wind carried us along at a good speed.  The fine sea air was inspiring.  It was noon when we returned from our delightful voyage.  We were very hungry as a consequence our voyage, so we sought dinner.  After which Elder Everett and I left the other parties and went to take in the sights.  Our first visit was on a very high bluff overlooking the North Sea on which stood and viewed the large expanse of water ahead which decked with steamers, fishing smacks, and pleasure boats.  On the bluff where we stood was the old Scarborough Castle which is partly ruined.  Cromwell's armies besieged it at one time leaving parts of the ruined walls to tell the tale.  Leaving here we went over to the barracks of the English army who were stationed on the coast.  One of the officers took us through the quarters and showed us every part of the camp.  Then we went over to the Battery where they were shooting the large guns at targets out in the sea a mile and a half.  It was a wonderful sight.  Leaving there we prepared to leave for home.  Left Scarborough at 6 P.M. arriving at Carlisle 11:30 P.M.  Came home and retired.

Bank Holiday in England

Monday, July 31, 1905.  Carlisle.

We went tracting in the forenoon.  Had good success also in the afternoon.  IN the evening, we took our laundry up to Sister Atkinson's, then went on to Upperby.  Spent the evening there.  Had supper also.  We returned quite late and retired.

Tuesday, August 1, 1905.  Carlisle.

This morning we made out our monthly reports and sent them in.  Then took a walk down to the Eden River and studied till noon.  Coming home, we had dinner then got ready and started for Wetherel, a distance of five miles out of Carlisle to visit Bro. and Sis. Porter.  The walk was fine.  All along the road going out, the farmers we[re] harvesting their grain.  It was a great sight to see them.  Some cut their grain with the scythe and others with a mowing machine and had boys and girls employed to bind it by hand.  Others had self binders.  They would not wash the grain, but would glean it very clean.  After spending a nice afternoon and evening at Porters, we came home.

Wednesday, August 2, 1905.  Carlisle.

In the forenoon I studied my mutual lesson.  After dinner, we went tracting.  Tracted till evening then went to Mutual at No 7 Regent Terrace.  I presided we had a nice meeting after which we went home and went to bed.

Thursday, August 3, 1905. Carlisle.

We done some visiting today.  First call was on Mrs. Grassly who is investigating the Gospel.  Then we went to Mrs. Crowthers.  From there we went to visit Sister Taylor.  Took tea then spend a nice evening.  From there we called on Bro & Sis. Sanders and later in the evening came home and retired.

Friday, August 4, 1905.  Carlisle.

In the forenoon we went down to the Hall to study.  At noon, we came home, had dinner, and went tracting.  It was blowing and at intervals raining.  It was hard to get the people to come to the door.  I did not have very good success.  When we finished tracting, came home, had supper, the[n] went down to Bro. Armstrong's.  Nobody home, but Mrs. Armstrong.  Stopped a few moments, then came home.

Saturday, August 5, 1905.  Carlisle.

We spent the forenoon in study.  In the afternoon, we went visiting.  Called on Mrs. Walker.  Had a nice long talk then came home.  In the afternoon, we went out on the street to hold meeting.  Our first meeting was held at the cross.  I was first speaker.  When I finished, my companion spoke.  We had a very large crowd of listeners.  When we finished, a man ask some questions which were answered.  Leaving the cross, we went up King St. and held another meeting.  I was the speaker.  Leaving there, we went to the Hall to assist in cleaning it up.  From there went to Atkinson's.  Got our laundry then home.

Sunday, August 6, 1905.  Carlisle.

The forenoon was spent in the lodge.  At 2:30 P.M. went to Sunday School. It being fast day, the meeting was given over to testimony bearing.  Many bore faithful testimony to the Gospel.  After Sunday school, we ent to Sister Atkinson's for tea.  Returning at 6:30 P.M. for services, there was quite a large crowd gathered.  Bro. Lightfoot spoke first, then Elder Everettt--his subject was Book of Mormon.  Then I spoke a short time on Grace.  After meeting, we talked a short time with some young men who was inquiring concerning our belief.  Then we went on the street and held a nice meeting.

Monday, August 7, 1905.  Carlisle.  Rainy.

Today is a holiday in England, known as Bank Holiday.  We could not do much work as the people were more or less pleasure seeking.  So we decided to accompany the Saints to Corby Castle, but it began to rain in so much our plans fell to the ground and we sought refuge from the rain.  We spent the day very pleasant at Sister Atkinson's where quite a number of the young people gathered.  We played games, partook of refreshments, had music and singing.  In the evening, came home and went to bed.

Tuesday, August 8, 1905.  Carlisle.

Spent the forenoon in study.  In the afternoon, we went to hunt some Saints who had not been visited for months.  My companion had only been to see them once and had forgotten where they lived.  We finally found them.  They were all well.  They worked in the cotter factory.  We came home and spent the evening tracting.  When we came home, we retired.

Tuesday, July 25, 1905.

We studied in the forenoon.  In the afternoon we called on a Church of England Minister who was reading the Book of Mormon.  We had a nice talk with him.  He treated us fine.  After leaving there we made another call.  Then went to Stanix (sp?) to visit a Mr. Heath who is investigating the Gospel.  He was not at home, but his wife and sister-in-law were.  They treated us fine.  After returning home, we had tea then went out tracting.  Spent the evening tracting.  I had a long talk with an Agnostic.  It was 9:30 when we finished tracting.

Wednesday, July 26, 1905.  Carlisle.

In the forenoon, my companion and [I] went to the banks of the Eden ricer underneath the trees to study.  After spending the forenoon in quiet study, we came home to dinner.  After which we started out to do some tracting.  Did not tract long, when we quit and went to Newtown to visit Mrs. Nelson.  We spent a nice afternoon taking tea with them.  Then we came home and went to Mutual at No. 7 Regent Terrace at Sister Atkinson's.  We retuned home after meeting.

Thursday, July 27, 1905.  Carlisle.

We spent the forenoon in study at the park.  In the afternoon, we went tracting.  Came home in the evening.  Had supper and went to the park to hear the band recital.  Enjoyed a most pleasant evening then came home.

Friday, July 28, 1905.  Carlisle.

In the afternoon we went tracting, meeting fair success.  Coming home, we had tea, then went out and held a street meeting in King St.  Afterwards went to Sister Atkinson's then home.

Saturday, July 29, 1905.  Carlisle.

In the forenoon we studied.  In the afternoon we called on Mrs. Walker and had a nice talk with her.  Then we came home in the evening.  We went and held a street meeting on King St.  Afterwhich we went to Sister Atkinson's.  After spending the evening, we came home.

Sunday, July 30, 1905.  Carlisle.

At 1 P.M., after having sinner, Elder Everett and I went to the Cumberland Infirmary to see Little Andrew Armstrong who was ill there.  We remained till 2 P.M. when we went to the Hall to hold Sunday School which began at 2:30.  Elder Everett presided.  After Sunday School we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea.  Retuning in the evening to services.  After which we held two street meetings, one at King Street--I was the speaker, the other was held at the Cross--Elder Everett spoke.  After the meetings we went home and retired.

A Missionary Vacation on Pioneer Day

Thursday, July 20, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle England.

The forenoon was spent in study.  At 1:30 we took Elder Riches down to the train and seen him off for Shields.  Returning to the Lodge, we were busy studying when Bro. George G. Campbell called to see us before leaving for Scotland, he being from that place on a visit.He was with us about two hours then left for home. In the evening, we went tracting.  We finished tracting at 9 P.M. and came home.

Friday, July 21, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

The forenoon was spent in study.  In the afternoon, we went to Newtown to do some tracting.  Before beginning our tracting we called on Mrs. Nelson who is investigating the Gospel. Had a nice talk with her and her two sisters.  After which we went tracting, met much cold indifference.  We finished tracting and came home.

Saturday, July 22, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

Torday we went visiting our investigators, going first to a Mrs. Young.  Had a good conversation with her and another lady.  Then we went tot he Crawther home to visit some friends.  From there to Mr. Walker's thence home.  In the evening, we held two Street Meetings, one at the cross, and another at Princess St.  Both meetings were well attended.  After the meetings we went to Sister Atkinson's.  Had supper, then home.

Sunday, July 23, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

In the forenoon, made out our weekly reports.  Had dinner at 12 noon.  At 2:30 P.M. we went to Sunday School.  I presided.  After Sunday School, we went to Bro. Armstrong's and administered to his son Andrew.  Then we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea, retuning in the evening to services.  We had a nice meeting, quite a few strangers same.After our meeting, we went out on the street and held a meeting.  We had a fine crowd.  After the meeting, we went to Sister Atkinson's to spend the evening.

Monday, July 24, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

Today being the 24th, we took a vacation.  We spent the afternoon at Sister Atkinson's.  Our amusements were principally playing ball with the girls till our Nellie got hit in the eye which ended ball playing.  A fine supper was prepared which we partook of.  After which we had some music from our Hannah and Lilly on the Mandoline and guitar, also Elder Everrett on the harmonica.  We left Sister Atkinson's quite early in the evening and went to Upperby to visit Sister Lightfoot.  After spending the evening, we came home.

Monday, July 17, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

In the forenoon we studied.  After dinner, the three of us went tracting.  When we finished tracting, we went to Upperby to see Sister Lightfoot.  She prepared a nice tea for us, strawberries and cream, all we could eat.  We remained there till late in the evening when Elder Everett and I started for home, leaving Elder Riches to stop over night.

Tuesday, July 18, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

Studied till dinner time.  As dinner, then we three Elder Everett, Riches, and myself went tracting.  We went among the aristocracy.  We received much cold indifference.  Elder Riches and I doubled up on a man who claimed to be sinless and saved.  Then his wife came to his assistance and we gave it to them from the scriptures, but they were so unreasonable, they would not accept scriptures.  We bore our humble testimonies to them and left.  After completing the day's tracting, we went and called on Sister Taylor.  Had tea there and practised some songs over the piano.  Leaving there, we called on Sister Sanders.  From there, took Elder Riches part way to Upperby where he was stopping with Bro. Lightfoot.  Then Elder Everett and [I] came home.  Retired later.

Wednesday, July 19, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

Studied in the forenoon.  In the afternoon, we went tracting.  After tracting, we went to Mutual at No. 7.  After our regular lesson was over, Bro. Campbell of Scotland spoke to us, also, Elder Riches. After meeting, we went home.

An Old Drunk at the Cross

Saturday, July 15, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

Today being Saturday, we were unable to do any tracting.  So our time was spent principally in studying.  We had dinner at the lodge.  In the evening, we prepared for a street meeting.  The first one was held at the Cross.  Elders Riches and Everett spoke.  At the beginning of our meeting an old drunk came up and bothered us by standing on the steps talking to the people.  We stood there and let him have his sayso.  Throngs of people flocked to see what was the matter, but he was the means of drawing a large crowd.  Finally a Church of England Minister we were acquainted with came up to me and asked me if the drunk was bothering us.  I told him slightly, so he ran over and pulled him down and took him away.  Afterwards an old woman raised a disturbance and a policeman captured her and took her away.  I shall never forget the Christian like spirit that was displayed by the Minister.  He has been reading the Book of Mormon which we lent him some time ago.  After this meeting, we went to King St. and held another meeting.  I was the speaker, subject Grace.  From there we went to Sister Atkinson's for our laundry, returning later.

Sunday, July 16, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

We did not take breakfast this morning as we were fasting for Bro. Armstrong's son, Andrew, who is ill.  At two thirty, we attended Sunday School.  Had a nice school, after which we went to Bro. Armstrong's to administer to Andrew.  We also took tea there.  In the evening, we went to services.  Elder Riches was first speaker, subject Baptism Essential to Salvation.  I then spoke on Authority.  Elder Everett gave the concluding remarks.  After meeting, we went on the Cross and held a short street meeting.  The rain prevented us from holding longer.  We had a fine crowd.  Elder Everett was the speaker.  After the meeting we went to Sister Atkinson's.  Spent the evening, then returned home.

Visitor to Carlisle and Election Day

Sunday, July 9, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.  Nice day.

After dinner we prepared to go to Sunday School, which commenced at 2:30 P.M.  I presided.  We had a fine school.  When it was out, we went to Sister Atkinson's for tea.  Returned at 6:30 P.M. for services.  I presided.  Elder White spoke first upon the Apostasy.  Elder Everett next spoke upon the First Principles.  After meeting we came out on the street to hold [a meeting].  The Cross was occupied so we went to Kings St.  Had a fine meeting.  Elder Everett spoke.  From there we went to Sister Atkinson's.  Had supper, then home.  Retired.
 
Monday, July 10, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

This morning, Elder Everett and I went tracting beginning at Kings St.  Tracted till noon then had dinner.  In the afternoon, we went out to Wetherel on a pleasure trip.  When we arrived at Bro. Porters, met Sister Atkinson, her four daughters, our Nellie, our Maud, our Hannah, and our Lily.  Also, Elder White who had gone out with them ahead of Elder Everett and I  Sister Porter prepared a grand repast [meal] which we enjoyed.  Bro. Porter, the four Miss Atkinson's and we Elders went to the woods for a walk.  We played ball, red man, and many other games till we were nearly tired out.  Then we returned to Bro. Porters.  All assembled in the parlour where an impromptu program was rendered.  It was nearly 11 P.M. when we set out for Carlisle.  Arrived about 1 A.M.

In the forenoon, we remained at lodge, writing and studying.  In the afternoon, I wrote my journal.  In the evening, we went tracting.  Met with good success.

Wednesday, July 12, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.  The forenoon, spent as usual.  IN the afternoon, spent the time tracting.  Finished King St. and also Princess St.  I had quite a few good conversations.  IN the evening, we went to mutual at No. 7 Regent Terrace.  Had a nice meeting.  Returning later to the lodge, we retired.

Thursday, July 13, 1905.  2 Aglionby St. Carlisle.

Today we tended to our usual routine of work.  At 1:30 P.M. we went with Elder White to the station.  Seen him off for South Shields.  Returning from the station, we went tracting.  When we came home from tracting, there was a telegram saying Elder Riches was coming to visit us.  We waited at the station till 1:45 A.M. to meet hime.  He came.  We retired soon after.

Friday, July 14, 1905.  2 Aglionby St.  Carlisle.

Today, Elder Everett and I took Elder Riches around to see the sights of Carlisle.  Our first visit was to the Castle.  The guide took us through and explained all history connected with it.  We were taken into the dark cold dungeons where hundreds of prisoners perished for want of food and drink.  The cold, wilting feeling gave us a shudder.  I sat on a piece of masonry or a rock wall that was built by the Romans 1,826 years ago.  In fact, John, the Divine and the Apostle Simon were still on the earth.  When we came out of the dungeons, we went upon the walls of the castle and watched the soldiers drill.  We then left the castle and went to the Carlisle Museum.  There being a find collection of ancient relics, among which was Roman pottery, weapons of war and their sculpture work.   Also, ancient Britain relics, a display of their ingenuity, a very interesting feature was the death warrant of Mary Queen of Scots as it was written by Queen Elizabeth of England.  Among the interesting sights were displays of ancient and modern arts and sculpture work.  In another room, was a very fine display of birds, of every description.  Leaving the Museum, we went to the beautiful Cathedral.  Went through it.  From there came home to dinner.  After which we went to the Park to spend the afternoon in study underneath the trees.  After studying two hours on a subject, each of us took our turn preaching on what we had studied.  Returning from the Park, we went tracting.  Met with good success.  We afterwards went to Sister Atkinson's for the evening.  Today is election day.  What a confusion.  Every body is excited and agitated as to who is going to be put in.  The candidates were Mr. Chance Liberal, and Mr. Sanderson the Conservative.  The former being successful by 1,030 votes.  The office they were running for was the House of Commons, which is the same as our Representatives.
